Houston’s quote concluded his thoughts on why the company had become a success. It was simple. They took complicated compatibility and other-cloud related issues that the average web-user couldn’t solve on his own, and designed a software that solved the problems by itself, presenting the humanoid with the least amount of steps to accomplish his or her desired outcome.

The trick is for the product to get out of the way of the user. Would you rather pick the flower from the plant, or perform the steps the plant takes over the course of its existence to create that flower? The plant is better at that sort of thing, I say let it handle that business. This same idea applies to technology and life, where circuits and humans encounter 2nd and 3rd parties and make decisions about who does what. Defer to expertise and automate the chores.

It’s a matter of reducing the levels of friction that result in abandonment of cause.

In my two most recent “office jobs,” I’ve noticed two reoccurring phenomenon: itchy backs and sneezes.

There may be more to that itch than meets the fingers.

My last boss frequently visited me in my office to see how I was doing. He’d stand in the doorway, and by about 30 seconds in he’d be unconsciously rubbing his back against the doorframe. A little bear in the office jungle, rubbin up on some office bark. Doing the doorway shimmey. Observing the same thing in my current employment, I wondered what is it that drives these men to give in to their inner bear?
